“Quando o recanto mais remoto do globo tiver sido conquistado pela técnica e explorado pela economia, quando um qualquer acontecimento se tiver tornado acessível em qualquer lugar a qualquer hora e com uma rapidez qualquer, quando se puder “viver” simultaneamente um atentado a um rei na França e um concerto sinfônico em Tóquio, quando o tempo for apenas rapidez, momentaneidade e simultaneidade e o tempo enquanto História tiver de todo desaparecido da existência de todos os povos, quando o pugilista for considerado o grande homem de um povo, quando os milhões de manifestantes constituírem um triunfo – então, mesmo então continuará a pairar e estender-se, como um fantasma sobre toda esta maldição, a questão: Para quê? – Para onde? – e depois, o que?

O declínio espiritual da terra está tão avançado que os povos ameaçam perder a sua última força espiritual que (no que concerne o destino do “Ser”) permite sequer ver e avaliar o declínio como tal.

Esta simples constatação nada tem a ver com um pessimismo cultural, nem tampouco, como é óbvio, com um otimismo; pois o obscurecimento do mundo, a fuga dos deuses, a destruição da terra, a massificação do homem, a suspeita odienta contra tudo que é criador e livre, atingiu, em toda a terra, proporções tais que categorias tão infantis como pessimismo e otimismo já há muito se tornaram ridículas”.
